Why Does a Magnet Matter (10 pts)

The earth contains a giant magnet. Van Allen pointed this out, discovering the radiation belts for which he is famous. This leads to the auroras, or Northern and Southern lights.

Watch the clip and give 3 pieces of evidence for the earth experiencing magnetic reversal. Also explain why the earth as a magnet is such an important feature. You may do this in your blog or here, in the comments section.

1. Rocks that contain iron particles pointed a different way because of the magnetic field.
2. Earths magnetic field decreased 10%
3. The Earth has been hot, and will still hot for another billion years

1.) The magnetic field protects the earth from most of the sun's harmful rays
2.) The earth's magnetic field had reversed and it changes once every few thousand years
3.) different types of rocks have different magnetic pulls

-The magma was facing south instead of north
-Magnetic field has decreased 10% in the last century and a half.
-The magnetic needles faced south instead of north.
It is important because if the center burns out then the magnetic field goes away and the earth would be bombarded with harmful cosmic rays

-Iron particles that were magnotized in opposite direction.
-Earth's magnetic field reverssed itself and changed direction.
-Earth's magnitized field decreased 10% in last century and a half.

-harmful rays would bombard earth and life would be impossible

this is Kelly, Kim, and Julia,
- the earth's pull has changed many time in the past 1000s of years
- some rocks have different magnetic fields
- the magnetic field has decreased 10%

1. The magma from the volcanoes was facing south instead of north

2. The compass needles flipped

3. Earth's magnetic field has decreased 10% in the last century and a half

And the magnetic field is important because it keeps the inner earth hot and without the middle being hot all things on earth would die

Three Pieces of Evidence:

1) The Earth's magnetic field has become 10 percent weaker within the last 150 years
2) The magnetic rocks along the sea floor alternate the directions in which they point, some are pointing North and some South
3) They can tell the ages of the rocks, and they look at which way certain groups of rocks are pointing within a certain time period.

Importance: The magnitism gives us all a universal direction of North, South, East, and Southeast

1. when the molten rock cooled, the iron particles within it point south
2. within the last 150 years earth's magnetic field has decreased by 10%
3. scientists think the earth will remain hot for the next billion years

the earth's magnetic field is important because without it we would have no way to navigate our way around the planet. we could as soon as it headed south, but for a few thousand years we could be at zero with no magnatism

1. The magma was facing south instead of north appearently.

2. The decrease of 10% in the last century in Earths magnetic field.

3. Compass needles flipped. (I actuall watched a show on the discovery channel about that. The poles reverse over a period of a lot of year. And the discovery channel is all the proof i need)

Without the magnetic force all of earth's life would die due to extreme tempuratures.
